Identification

Cluster flies
Description: black and silver chequered pattern. large and dark in colour Habitat: Common pest of buildings especially in country locations where they swarm into relatively large numbers and more indoors to over-winter. Lifecycle: A female cluster fly lays eggs in burrows of earthworms. The eggs take 3 days to a week to hatch, depending on weather conditions. Eggs hatch to produce larvae that are maggot-like parasites and develop in the soil. After hatching, larvae parasitically feed on earthworms for another week before they grow into pupae. Season: autumn and early Winter
	Common house fly
	Description: 1/4 inch long: dull gray with four stripes on the thorax; 4th wing vein sharply angled Habitat: lay there eggs (up to 150) in rotting vegetation and drains Lifecycle: These eggs hatch in 1-2 days into Larvae for approximately 1 weeks before pupating for roughly 1-2 weeks when the fully grown adult emerges they can mate after only 4 days, this fast lifecycle can result in the prompt development of swarms. Season: Around all year but hibernate in winter.
Blowflies (greenbottle, bluebottle)
Description: large; metallic blue or green color Habitat: lay eggs in the body of a dead animal, sometimes vermin or birds that can sometimes be located in your attic or cavity wall. Lifecycle: These eggs hatch in 1-2 days into Larvae for approximately 1 week before pupating for roughly 1-2 weeks when the fully grown adult emerges they can mate after only 4 days, this fast lifecycle can result in the prompt development of swarms. Season: More abundant in spring/summer. However, all year round.
	Stable fly
	Description: Similar to housefly in appearance; 1/4-inch long; pointed proboscis. Habitat: Breeds in long grass, straw or grass cuttings. Lifecycle: Stable flies breed in moist, decaying organic matter. The average stable fly life cycle in the field ranges from 12–20 days depending on the environmental conditions, but is usually around 28 days. Season: Population peaks around late summer.

Harmful health effects

Flies breed and feed in unsanitary conditions where larvae feed on decaying organic matter. Contamination agents survive on the outside body, gut and blood system. Diseases caused include many lower respiratory and urinary tract infections and acute gastroenteritis type complaints.

Treatment

Insecticide sprays

Both knockdown and residual sprays can be used on flies. Please contact Eliminate to assess which treatment would be best for you.

Deep cleaning / good hygiene & proofing with screens

All physical solutions are particularly effective in reducing numbers, Screens on food production facilities have been compulsory for a number of years.

Electric Fly Killer or E.F.K.

An Electric Fly Killer can be a highly efficient tool to combat fly infestation as well as being an effective wasp killer. 24 Hour protection against flying insects such as wasps & flies can be provided.

The tubes within the electric fly killer emit UV light drawing the Fly towards it. Depending on the type of ELK supplied, the fly is either electrocuted and its parts drop into a collecting tray that requires regular emptying or the fly is trapped by a sticky pad.

The position of the ELK is critical to its effectiveness. Eliminate are happy to work with a customer to choose and install the ELK in the most efficient position. However, we may need help from a qualified electrician if a power source is not readily available.

To maintain the EFK the tubes should be changed at least once per year since the phosphor coating, which produces the UV, deteriorates with use. Eliminate can provide this service as a fixed price one off call or as part of a service contract. We also stock pestwest range of EFK’s so can supply you with this if you choose.
